Children's Mercy - Springfield, MO Clinic

Northstar served as the Program Manager/Owner’s Representative on the new ambulatory 40,000 square feet, two-story pediatric specialty care clinic located on a greenfield site in Springfield, MO. The facility was designed to provide comprehensive outpatient pediatric specialty services supporting a wide range of clinical programs, including Cardiology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Surgery, Stress Testing, Urology and Primary Care. The specialty clinic includes 36 exam rooms, along with integrated diagnostic and support services, including X-ray, Ultrasound, ECHO, Phlebotomy, and dedicated stress test functional spaces.

Challenged with an aggressive project completion target, the team implemented an accelerated design and construction strategy that enabled the early release of bid packages based on construction sequencing. This phased approach allowed sitework and early construction activities to begin before completion of the overall design, compressing the project schedule and positioning the team to meet the demanding delivery timeline.

A key strategy employed by the project the team was the implementation of a prefabricated exterior envelop system. While the building structure was under construction on-site, exterior wall panels were simultaneously fabricated in a controlled warehouse environment. Once the structure was complete, the prefabricated panels were installed approximately 80% faster than traditional field-built methods, allowing the facility to become weather-tight significantly earlier in the overall schedule. This approach enabled construction activities to commence sooner and played a critical role in achieving the project’s aggressive completion goals.
